SUMMARY:Mass Envirothon - Registration Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Trees\, Forests\, and Sustainability in Massachusetts\n\nIn thi
s component of the Envirothon program\, teams research a current environme
ntal issue as it occurs in their own community\, then prepare a presentati
on on their findings and proposed solutions. Each year the Massachusetts E
nvirothon Committee takes the Canon Envirothon's Current Issue and works t
o ensure that the topic is relevant to ALL Massachusetts communities. Wide
-ranging community research is encouraged\, including field study\, interv
 iews of scientists\, advocates\, local officials\, and residents\, interne
t and library searches\, map reading\, and visits to town hall.\n\nMany te
ams take what they learn in their current issue research and apply it in a
community action project. Any team that demonstrates high research standa
rds in their current issue work\, or applies their Envirothon learning in
a service project\, is eligible for an Envirothon Community Award.\n\nAt t
he state competition in May\, the team makes a presentation of their Curre
nt Issue findings and recommendations to a panel of judges (including natu
ral resource managers\, local and state officials\, environmental advocate
s\, and others) who score them and provide helpful feedback on their knowl
edge\, proposed solutions\, and presentation skill. A highlight of the exp
erience is the interaction between the teams and the judges when the scori
ng is completed. After the morning competition\, teams have a chance to sh
are their current issue research and community action projects informally
 at a lunchtime "roundtables" session.

SUMMARY:Planet Connect Student Grants - Application Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re in a city\, rural area or a suburb\, wildlife
is all around you. In many places\, wildlife faces challenges. Are you a h
igh school student with a creative idea for conserving and protecting wild
life and its habitat in your community? Planet Connect is offering high sc
hool students grants of $1\,000 to implement their problem-solving project
s and participate in a local internship focused on wildlife conservation.\
n\nWildlife conservation issues exist all around us—and so do opportunit
ies to address these issues. Start paying attention to changes happening i
n your community and think outside the box. Wildlife and their habitats ar
e not just located in the woods or forested areas—they are in the trees
in your backyard\, the shrubs around your school building and everywhere e
lse. Ask yourself\, what local wildlife habitats or natural resources are
being threatened and by what? What problem is this creating in your commun
ity? What can you do to help?\n\nOnce you have focused in on a specific is
sue occurring in your community\, think about specific goals for your proj
ect\, and the steps you will need to take in order to address the problem.
Do you see any opportunities to protect or preserve wildlife habitat? In
some cases\, it may require creating a new habitat or perhaps conserving c
ertain areas alongside development. Think about what kind of project could
be developed to address the issue. Can you think of something that could
get your whole community involved? What will the positive impacts be for t
he community? Perhaps you could add support and fresh ideas to efforts tha
t are already in place.\n\nIn the application you will be asked to create
a timeline for implementing your project\, as well as a detailed budget\,
describing how you will tackle the problem\, what tools you will use\, who
you will work with\, and what positive outcomes you foresee. If chosen as
a winner\, you will be provided $500.00 to turn your project idea into re
ality. After completing your project in June\, you will participate in an
80-hour wildlife conservation or natural resource internship in your local
community during the summer of 2012. At the end of the internship you wil
 l be awarded a $500.00 stipend.\n\nHere’s your chance to make a differen
ce!\n\nSponsored by the National Environmental Education Foundation.\n\nAp
ply now! Applications are due February 1\, 2012.
