During the 2025-2026 school year, students created meaningful environmental and social impact throughout the Northampton area. Through partnerships with farms, nonprofits, and local organizations, students developed practical skills, strengthened community connections, and discovered the power of their own voices as environmental leaders. Students\u2019 focus in all of these partnerships was on mitigating the impacts of climate change.<br><br>HEC Academy has sought to deepen students\u2019 understanding of environmental issues while providing authentic opportunities to engage with their community. The academy places a strong emphasis on experiential learning and real-world skill development. Students began by exploring food systems, tracking the ingredients and embodied energy behind favorite foods, and recreating those foods from scratch in cooking class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After visiting experimental climate-resilient farming plots operated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.growfoodnorthampton.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grow Food Northampton<\/a>, students chose to focus their civics project on flood mitigation strategies for local farms. The students recognized that extending the life of clothing, furniture, books, and other household goods can reduce waste while helping to meet real needs in the community. <strong>The students:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Participated in an agency-wide clothing swap<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Volunteered at the Huntington Village Closet, helping to redistribute clothing, books, and toys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Worked with Project ReUse to furnish homes for refugees using donated furniture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participated in the annual Northampton toy exchange and the Bikes for All bicycle redistribution program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helped create opportunities for peers to access needed clothing and supplies through an in-school exchange area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These initiatives diverted usable materials from disposal while addressing economic barriers faced by many families in the community. Just at HEC, more than 60% of the students qualify for free or reduced-cost meals. Building the infrastructure to provide access to reused clothing and household items while connecting students\u2019 personal experiences to climate change has been especially valuable.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reducing Wasted Food, Strengthening Local Food Systems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wasted food reduction has remained a cornerstone of HEC\u2019s environmental efforts because it sits at the intersection of many of the issues the students care about most: climate change, food security, resource conservation, and community well-being. By examining where food comes from, how it is used, and what happens when it is discarded, students have gained a deeper understanding of the environmental impacts of everyday choices. Their efforts have focused not only on preventing waste, but also on ensuring that edible food and organic materials continue to provide value within different systems throughout the community. The students:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maintained a composting program that supports the school garden<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Used garden-grown vegetables and rescued food in cooking classes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Redistributed uneaten food to local food assistance organizations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participated in gleaning projects to recover surplus produce for donation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collaborated with local schools to improve lunch ordering systems and reduce waste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connected food recovery efforts with animal care organizations by redirecting food scraps and produce remnants to animal rescue partners<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The school garden itself serves as a living laboratory, producing vegetables used in weekly cooking classes while helping students understand food production, resource cycles, and environmental stewardship.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Circular Economy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HEC\u2019s recycling and reuse efforts extend beyond traditional recycling education by helping students understand the principles of the circular economy. This approach seeks to keep materials in use for as long as possible rather than sending them to disposal. Through hands-on projects and partnerships with local organizations, students have learned how their actions can create meaningful climate and social impact. They have gained practical experience in environmental stewardship, food systems, waste reduction, public speaking, teamwork, and community engagement while developing stronger connections to the people and organizations around them.<br><br>Just as importantly, sustainability has become part of the culture at HEC.
